<image:caption>PRELIMINARY STAGING — Again, please forgive the naked mannequin. She, too, needs to be cleaned before dressing. On this one, I just wanted to see if I liked the columns in back of the 1930s set, and I think I can make them work. They just need a little paint and topper, of some sort. I haven’t decided what I want to do, just yet. I’ll correct the weird angle next time. Photo Copyright LKP</image:caption>

<image:caption>I had a little fun with this one … with my granddaughters in mind. I thought they’d get a kick out of seeing their MeMa being silly. The fun was figuring out how to put it all together. First, coming up with the idea and the crazy outfit. Then making a video with my phone, which is always amazing to me. Then capturing the image by screen shot and finally creating the layout. I’m getting the hang of all this new technology and learning something new everyday, which is always a good thing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Postmarked October 31, 1913 Answer Soon! I picked up this postcard years ago at an antique shop in my hometown of Fort Dodge, Iowa, simply for the Halloween graphic on the front. Now, after all these years, I’m noticing what was written on the back. It reads to me as if a “Cathryn” is trying to make a date with “Master Harold Hall.” Now, I want to know more about Harold Hall. AND, please help me decipher what it actually says. I can’t quite make out the words. You can leave your ideas in the comments. All I’ve Discovered So Far: An obituary for an Emerson Harold Hall, 85, of Winston, Oregon, who was born August 10, 1935 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Harold Hall and Alice (Simonson) Hall. It’s a start.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This wonderful drawing of a coffee pot house that I included in my display was actually a real place in my hometown of Fort Dodge, Iowa, where you could go for a cup of coffee and a spin on the dance floor. I just thought it so cool that my husband had the picture in his art collection when we got together because I’d featured it in the Fort Dodge Today magazine when I was editor. So that clipping is taped to the back. (photo below) And, I’m so glad artist, Sumner Heman, had the foresight to capture the historic house for posterity. Sadly, it was torn down in the 1970s.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Lavender Bling These earrings were really a great find because they’ll go with a purple and pink outfit we just put together this week and they’re two in one. You can wear them as shown or as just the little pink pearls.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Hat This beautiful coral straw hat by Sandra, included in this slide show, is styled like a man’s fedora but was called the Vagabond in the 1960s. Though a bit misshapen and worn when purchased it looks like new, now, after a good steaming.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Flea Market FridayS: 11/20/20</image:title>
<image:caption>The Case I wasn’t really looking for storage this week but when a jeweler’s sample case showed up, well, I couldn’t pass it up. The clincher was that it has six drawers, one for each decade covered in the exhibit.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f45600953bb312cbb67c022/1619449524234-QN4WG92D6WKMBEPY3QZP/CamiKnickers.jpeg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Flea Market FridayS: 11/20/20</image:title>
<image:caption>The Edwardian Undergarments The cotton romper, known as a camiknicker, camisole and slip set really is the find of the week, maybe even the decade. I mean, to find 100-year-old undergarments in near pristine condition is remarkable. Though they’re from the Edwardian era, which predates what I’m presenting in my exhibit, I’ll use them to show how women were cloaked and cinched before they roared into the ‘20s and let everything hang loose. They’re even monogramed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Flea Market FridayS: 11/20/20</image:title>
<image:caption>The Purse Another great find was this fun beaded drawstring pouch bag from the 1970s, which is a nod back to those fashionable in the 1920s. I’m showing the multi-colored candy dot side, but it’s reversible with white beads on white for the flip side.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - MY STORY</image:title>
<image:caption>We never know the part we’ll play in another person’s life, nor how our course might be altered because of a life-changing event. In this chapter of my story, the person I’m talking about is my collaborator Oakley Boycott and the event is the pandemic of 2020. We met nearly 20 years ago when I first moved to Wyoming from Iowa and took a side gig to my reporting job of being costumer for the local community college. I had no idea the young teenager I’d hired as my assistant was in any need of a rescue as she describes in her story, as follows. I just knew we had a lot of fun “playing” in my costume shop. A couple years later, I was working for her, technically, creating costumes for her Dulcinea in the college’s “Man of La Mancha.” From there, we kept in touch through the years as she set out for New York to become an actress and model. We supported each other in new endeavors, leaned on each other in times of need and ran off to thrift stores whenever we had the chance. So, it really comes as no surprise that she would be the one to rescue me from a depression brought on by the sudden death of my son. He died unexpectedly in April of 2020, of natural causes at the age of 40. I kept telling myself I’d survive, but had trouble getting off my couch. That’s when Oakley swooped in, yes, she swoops, and convinced me I could finish my historical clothing exhibit and launch my online store because she’d be here to help. COVID had the actress/model hunkered down in her childhood home nearby instead of basing out of New York. Coming together at this time to complete this project truly does fulfill a need, a passion and a dream; a dream of owning my own store, a passion for preserving history and the need for a rescue from the depths of despair. Now, here we are, once again, “playing” in my costume shop, creating colorful characters, shooting beautiful photos, filming fun videos and running off to thrift stores whenever we can. What’s different now, though, is that we’re set on a mission of turning my static exhibit into a virtual tour and showing our followers how to create their own unique style out of classic, vintage clothing. Like I said in the beginning of my story, we just never know what parts we’re meant to play in the story of our lives or who might pass through to help us along the way. In this chapter, it’s Oakley, and for that I am forever grateful. Leslie Drollinger Stratmoen Owner of “Flappers to Fringe Vintage”</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - MY STORY</image:title>
<image:caption>“I don’t think we realize how people help us to save our own lives until we are forced to reckon with how alive we feel when they share with us their own passions and zest for the complexities of being alive. When I was 14 years old, Leslie saved my life. In the costume shop of our local community college theatre, she hired me to assist her as she designed costumes for the current production of “Meet Me in St. Louis”. Not knowing at the time, the impact that she would have in giving a 14-year old theatre kid with a lost soul the opportunity to work in a theatre, Leslie is one of the many reasons that I believe that when you lean into, share and express your passions and what you love from the depths (and sometimes the darkness) of your being, it helps to heal the world around you. I have never wanted to be anything else. I’ve never wanted to do anything else. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else. I have only ever dreamed of living in New York City, in the middle of everything and to be an actress. For the last 13 years that is exactly what I’ve done: creating visions and versions of how I see myself and how I wish to be seen, expressed through theatre, film, fashion, music, performance art or anything else that assists in the expressed light my inner workings. The freedom of limitless possibilities in shape shifting within my day job, bleeds into my addiction to thrifting. Expressing the mercurial versions of my Self within the creation of new personas through thrifted, vintage and vintage-inspired styles has been an integral part life throughout my Wyoming upbringing and life beyond. Oh baby, maneuvering the realities of this wild, wild, world and being a part of this new collaboration with Leslie on “Flappers to Fringe Vintage”with continued personal healing and growth through shared passion of vintage fashion, the unearthing of second-hand treasures, and friendship is something I do not take for granted.” -Oakley Boycott “Flappers to Fringe” collaborator</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Story - OUR STORY We Thrifted Before It was Cool By Owner/Curator Leslie Drollinger Stratmoen … Our story really is one of healing through friendship. We are two friends who share a passion for bringing joy and ultimate healing through music, the arts, performance and clothes, vintage, that is. Our happy place, when not on stage or creating a new project, truly is sifting through boxes and trunks in thrift stores, antique shops and attics, when invited, to find beautiful, classic pieces. We’ve been doing this for years, whenever we get together. So when it came time for me to let go of the pieces I would not need for my final clothing exhibit and Oakley was available to help because of the pandemic lock down, we came up with a plan — creating an online exhibit and shop. The exhibit will feature fashions from the 1920s-70. So everything else has to go. The collection is extensive, gathered over several decades for my own personal collection, exhibits, performances and productions. And, there’s more, of course, because we’re still thrifting, whenever we get the chance. Amazingly enough, we’re having a grand time, in this topsy-turvy COVID world, whether we’re working on the exhibit or in the shop. It’s just so much fun and joyful creating the looks of the past, then giving them new life by styling the old with the new. We really do hope this joy somehow passes on to you through the clothes and inspires you to get creative, try new combinations and just have fun with fashion. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? So enjoy, and thank you for dropping by.</image:title>

<image:title>Film Costumer History - Excerpt from</image:title>
<image:caption>“Costume Design in the Movies” by Elizabeth Leese Edited by Leslie Drollinger Stratmoen Since the first films were released, women had been acquiring fashion tips from the movies, according to Elizabeth Leese, the author of “Costume Design in the Movies.” In her book, she says those first films provided a record of how the ordinary, everyday person dressed because they captured everyday events. Before Films Before the advent of film, she says, the average woman kept in touch with society fashions by studying newspapers and magazines or the limited number of fashion publications that were available at the time. Probably the most accessible source of fashion information, she says, was the series of picture postcards of famous beauties. Then everything changed when halls in every town were converted into cinemas and high fashion could be seen by everyone. Fashion Films Come to America So, by 1917, she says, fashion reels that had become a staple in Europe came to America through the Pathe company. The company made a series of films called “Florence Rose Fashions,” directed by the fashion page editor of the “New York Evening Mail,” Florence Rose. Thirty-one of these shorts were issued between 1916 and 1917, she says, all with a simple storyline, but the series was promoted with far more care than any previous efforts. The idea, she said, was to release a film every couple of weeks with a tie-up between a dozen of the leading American newspapers like the “Chicago Daily News,” the “Boston Traveler” and “Pittsburgh Dispatch.” Articles appeared in relevant papers for a couple weeks before the film was to be shown at the local cinema. The articles were written by Mrs. Radnor-Lewis, who was the former managing editor of “Harper’s Bazaar” and illustrated by Winifred I Messer. Newspapers and Films Align Now, for the first time, she says, the ordinary fashion-conscious American woman could read the fashion page in her local paper and then go to the cinema to see the styles modelled. The newspapers must have given all the details of where the reader could buy the clothes, she said, because no advertising was done on the screen. She says all the clothes used in the “Florence Rose Fashions” films were American and reference was constantly made to the manufacturers, not designers. So, it seems, she says, that the clothes were more accessible than in the earlier examples of fashion films. She says the titles used at the beginning of the series indicate what sort of simple plots were used: “The Beginning of the Social Season,” “Weekend House Party” and “A Day in New York.” But the format must have changed slightly, she says, because they began to release the films every week and the titles of the later issues give the impression that the series had turned into the old formula for fashion newsreels. McCall’s Goes to the Movies Then in 1925, she said, the Educational Film Exchanges Inc. (an American company) announced the release of a new series called McCall Fashion News and was to be in the new Eastman Color Process, which claimed to produce natural flesh tints and reproduce various shades of red which had previously been impossible. The first edition was called “Paris Creations in Color” and featured gowns from Poiret, Jenny, Worth and Lanvin. Hope Hampton was the star. Films Present Fashion Forecast Leese goes on to say that no new ideas for fashion shorts appeared in the late ‘20s and ‘30s, although they continued to be part of the program of supporting news or cine-magazines. But in 1938, she said a lady who was working at the Fox Studios in Hollywood conceived and directed a series of eight films called “Fashion Forecast,” which ran from 1938-40. Vyvyan Donner was a fashion journalist and dress designer and had been fashion editor of Fox Movietone News since 1929. The Fashion Forecast series was filmed in Technicolor. Each item ran for about eleven minutes and claimed to feature America’s most beautiful models. It was written by Miss Donner and narrated by Ilka Chase. The idea wasn’t new, says Leese, but, because the series had a soundtrack, the display of gowns wasn’t broken up by the appearance of title cards on the screen. The Fashion Forecasts were widely publicized in the States, she said, with extensive tie-ups being arranged across the United States. At that point in time, she said, couture houses had always supplied dresses for feature films, particularly from New York, because so much filming was done in the East Coast Studios. She said the couture houses did not, as a general rule, though, get any kind of screen credit. News items, however, often appeared in trade and fan magazines telling film-goers that a star would be getting her dresses from a particular fashion house. Alice Joyce and Corinne Griffith were faithful to Madame Frances. Many actresses used Hattie Carnegie, says Leese, but “she was smart enough to get a screen credit for the films she did with Constance Bennett.” Fashion Designers Come On Board Leese went on to say some films capitalized on the designer’s name and made good use of the fashion aspect of the film when planning the publicity campaign. Feature films set in and around fashion houses were not uncommon, she said, but the gowns displayed would be the work of a designer under contract to the studio. This was acceptable, she said, because people like Adrian were perfectly capable of providing the right clothes and probably looked upon the assignment as a heaven-sent opportunity to showcase their talents.</image:caption>

<image:caption>You know, I actually purchased this “Etude” magazine cover jacket at a local antique store because I was costuming a show set in the early 1920s with women of all ages as characters. When I say, jacket, I really mean it. There are no insides. All that’s left of this publication is the front and back cover. I don’t remember what I paid for it, probably a couple of bucks. Whatever it was, it was worth it, because this is just such a great collection of the “looks” of the day. I love seeing their hairdos, hats, glasses, jewelry and clothing, their Sunday best, as we used to say. It’s these types of rare pieces that not only help me set the stage for a show but help me date my collectibles. A rare find. Insets below</image:caption>

<image:title>1920s Flapper Gown - The Flapper Gown</image:title>
<image:caption>Here’s an example of a Clara Bow style “flapper” gown worn for evenings. I purchased this at a thrift shop in the 1990s and actually wore it on stage when I performed as Vera in the musical, “Mame.” I can’t believe I did that. The gown was already 70 years old at the time. Now, over 100 years old, it was too fragile to even wear.</image:caption>

<image:title>1920s Robe de Style</image:title>
<image:caption>I paired this sweet little dress from my collection with a vintage purse and string of pearls, also from the 1920s. The parasol is a reproduction, probably from the 1990s, that I used when I costumed the musical, “Meet Me In St. Louis,” and the lovely head-scarf wrap is actually a cast-off satin table runner from my daughter’s events venue business. I grabbed it because you just never know when a table runner might come in handy. Case in point, this little throw-away proved to be the perfect topper for this ensemble. The shoes, you’ll see in other pictures are also vintage ‘20s, I’d picked up somewhere along the way. And closeups of the dress show the collar and front detailing to be rhinestones set in metal prongs, which makes it even more amazing that this dress survived the years. <image:caption>FREEDOM Was the Word In everything -- Freedom of Form, Fashion & Function. The Form Went from body shaping with corsets and petticoats. To no form at all over silk camisoles, petite pants, slips and camiknickers. The Fashion Went from structured garments to loose-fitting shifts. All in all, they were looser, shorter and freer. The Function Was all about the movement. Long and tight gave way to short and loose.</image:caption>

<image:title>20sDayDresses - Day Dress</image:title>
<image:caption>The SILHOUETTE Was the Long, Lean, no Boobs, no Hips Boyish Look. You thought it started in the ‘60s with Twiggy, didn’t you? Well, not so. The gals of the ‘20s were way ahead of us, rebelling against the corsets of the decade before, just as we did later, rebel against the girdle. Even the adornments enhanced the illusion — like wearing plumed headdresses and high tiaras to elongate the neck and flowing handkerchief hems and pointy-toed shoes to lengthen the leg. You even had artists of the day, like Erte, who further elongated the form in his illustrations, and Coco Chanel, who in coming up with her Little Black Knit Dress made the shape even for slinky and tubular. Now, there’s a couple of designers who’ve stood the test of time, both through their creations and lasting legacies. (INSERT BLACK DRESSES) The CHALLENGE How did it work for the average gal? Well, we don’t really know, do we? We can see from old photographs that the style was embraced, wholeheartedly. But we can also see in pictures that “the look” worked better for some than others. Great for the tall and slim, not so much for the short and stout, some even look a bit dumpy. Still, one could imagine that most could create the look in whatever manner they chose because of the craftiness of the home-sewers and tailored fits. Still, it’s always a little dubious, to me, when the designers of the day decide the bosom is out of fashion. I mean, really? Does it ever? Go out? I mean. I have my doubts. HOUSE DRESS VS DAY DRESS There was a Distinction. Day Dress for Stepping Out — House Dresses for Staying In House Dress House Dresses were lightweight, easy to wear and made out of “cheerful” fabrics, like plaids, checks, ginghams, polka dots and the latest Art Deco and Egyptian geometrical prints. Day Dress Day Dresses were fancier made of crepe, rayon, silk, taffeta or velvet. And, solids, not prints, for daytime parties in rich colors. Mauve, purple, blue, sage green and burnt orange for Fall and for Summer, sunset orange, maize, French (powder) blue and Nile green, a color described as similar to jade, (Vintagedancer.com) which was named, I imagine, because of the Egyptian influence. Then, of course, black and white were in fashion for fall and summer, respectively, a trend that continued through the 1970s and beyond. All were then adorned with any manner of trim, like ribbons, rickrack, buttons and beads. The richer the fabrics and more elaborate the decoration, the better, for those wanting to raise their status quo to charming socialite. Trims Now, let’s talk about trims. Yes, let’s. Remember, movement was the “In” thing. So, anything that moved or brought attention to movement, like fringe and rhinestones was added; the fringe, for swishing and swaying and the rhinestones for catching the light. The embellishments were intricate, as represented in one of my pieces in the exhibit. My Robe de Style dress features prong-set rhinestones over inlaid lace which creates a meandering path of flowers through the solid coral crepe fabric. (INSERT DETAIL) Designers, it seems, were always coming up with ways to enhance the elongated shape, even when adding all the trimmings, by sewing the ribbons, buttons and bows in a vertical line. Or, they might add these embellishments to the points of already elongated collars or handkerchief hems. And, let’s not forget the embroidery that could be seen on cuffs, collars and skirt hems, all as a way of creating interest on what might otherwise be perceived as a simple dress, because of its lines. (PIPING DETAIL) Each and every little detail was designed to enhance that “look” of the elongated body. NECKLINES, SLEEVES, BELTS, TIES Even the necklines, sleeves, belts and ties figured into the elongated, streamlined look. They had to, especially the sleeves and necklines. Otherwise, they couldn’t be slipped over the head. Necklines The Bateau or boatneck emerged as the favorite because of its ease of form and function. Its wide opening was elegant, yet slipped easily over the head not requiring any buttons or hooks.The ease of dress fell in line with everything else about the easy-going and effortless ‘20s. Other necklines that fit the bill were deep V-necks, many times with an inset lace flap for modesty and sometimes squared sailor collar flaps in back, a design borrowed from men’s sailing uniforms. Also borrowed from the men’s line were shawl collars, supposedly influenced by the fisherman’s knit sweater. While the wide boat neck quickly faded from the early 1920s in favor of medium size round or pointed Chelsea collars (peter pan collars), the sailor bow tie remained fashionable for the entire decade. The later 1920s didn’t see a change in collar shapes, but rather in size. Deep V-necks shrunk up to narrow V’s, large round collars reduced to small Peter Pan collars, pointed collars became daintier, and even boat necks gathered in so that a single button at the back was necessary to pull over and fasten on. All necklines were modest. If a deep V was used, another piece of fabric backed the opening to create a square neck instead. Collars framed the shoulders and face but never called attention to any sort of bosom (Women had breasts? Not in the ’20s!). Sleeves The other defining characteristic of day dresses was the shape of the sleeves. Except for evening wear, most day dresses were long-sleeved. Fitted sleeves had little extra room in the shoulder or arm and fit straight down to either a full length with a wrist cuff. Short sleeves were reserved for summer and only for women with pretty arms. Short sleeves could mean just above the elbow or an almost sleeveless cap sleeve. Sleeveless day dresses were taboo unless a matching silk or sheer jacket was worn over it. Another common and unique long sleeve was the bell shape. They gradually went from fitted at the shoulder down to triangle or bell shape at elbow or forearm. Bell sleeves were quite open and comfortable compared to the fitted sleeves, although the longer lengths had a tendency to hang off the arm and into food while out for tea with friends. The third most common long day sleeve was called the bishop. It had small gathers at the shoulders for more ease and then ballooned down the arm and gathered again at the wrist with a thin cuff. It was a perfect balance between a sleeve that allowed freedom of movement and modest covering. It remained very common for at least the next two decades and can still be seen in clothing today. BELTS & TIES A fabric tie belt, buckle belt, or sash in the same or contrasting color was worn low on the waist or around the hip for most of the 1920s. The thickness of the belt is something that is associated with the year. Wide sashes on the middle or low waist were the most common in the early ’20s while thin and low hip lines were common in the middle to late 1920s. While this was the general trend, it was really up to the woman to decide what thickness and at what waist location was the most flattering on her body. Many dresses lacked any sort of beltline. Instead, the dress fell freely from shoulder to hem create a tube or column shape. CHOICES That was the great part about fashions of the 1920s. Women had choices, and so many. And, that, was the great part about this new found freedom. They could choose whatever style they wanted. And, that, was a new and revolutionary concept.</image:caption>

<image:title>1930s Eugenie Suit</image:title>
<image:caption>The Eugenie Suit Named for The Eugenie hat — which is a small sized hat, with or without brim, that is tilted to one side and worn low on the brow, sometimes even over an eye. The hat style for the 1930s was created by costume designer Adrian for the film, Romance, starring Greta Garbo, for which he was said to have been inspired by a hat worn in the late 1800s by the French Empress Eugenie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III. As for The Outfit — it came together so beautifully and shows the lines of the 1930s — the fitted blazer and calf-length tulip skirt. And if you look closely at the full size shots, you’ll see the jacket even has inside straps so it won’t slip off when draped over the shoulders. I’ve worn the skirt, gloves and shoes for several performances and the purse is one I typically carry when I’m wearing a vintage gown. It just works so great, with its satin wrist strap and fits easily, a compact, lipstick, money, hanky and comb. All the necessities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibit - 1920s - The attitude</image:title>
<image:caption>The “Flapper Girl” Many young women coming of age in the 1920s were developing an attitude, you might say. They were throwing out the rules, throwing off their corsets and throwing up their heels. By this time, they’d suffered through a world war, a flu pandemic and the constrictive Edwardian styles and mores of the previous decade. Looking at it from this perspective, it’s no wonder they were letting loose. That meant clothing styles had to keep up with the times. So, for this new generation, that was on the move and kicking up their heels, up went the hems, down went the waists and off went the hair. And they were taking their fashion tips from more than newspapers, magazines and catalogues. They were now becoming worldly, through the magic of film, or “flickers” as they were first called, and were seeing news and FASHION REELS and emulating their favorite starlets of the day.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibit - 1920s - Scandalous!</image:title>
<image:caption>Many a young woman coming of age in the 1920s definitely did embrace the “flapper girl” attitude because the concern had gone mainstream. Standing testament to that fact is this article in my March 1922 McCall’s magazine. I was actually surprised to learn this because other historical reports I’d read suggested the “flapper girl” hadn’t come into being until the middle of the decade. This definitely disputes that notion and shows that the “flapper girl” had not only gone mainstream but was causing concern. Yet, some of the pattern illustrations in the same magazine show loose fitting dresses that did not require corsets. (Ads shown below) A bit of a mixed message to the readers, it seems. This was a concern, you understand, because the “flapper girl” was assumed to be of loose morals and the goal of many a mother, at this time, was to have her daughter be “the marrying kind.” So, being a wild “flapper girl” did not fit that bill. Now, if you do take time to zoom in on this article by Mrs. Winona Wilcox, who must have been the “Dear Abby” of her day, remember that “petting” in this era meant “kissing,” and that, apparently, was bad enough.</image:caption>

I did wear the gown, unfortunately, which was not kind to this once very beautiful dress. It’s still holding together, but just barely, because the crepe material is disintegrating. I’m still working on ways to refurbish the piece because the silver-threaded rhinestone design is really gorgeous.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Click HERE or on PIC to see Photo Shoot … I found this dress in an antique shop out West. The owner said he’d purchased it from a lady who would drive cross country in her vintage automobile as part of a caravan to various car shows. What a hoot! Or, toot? As in honk, honk. The dress may have been well travelled, but in really great shape. Oakley Boycott Model/Copyright Leslie Kay Productions</image:caption>
